A slow Android phone doesn’t necessarily need a factory reset — or a new battery, new storage or a trip to the repair shop.
One of the quickest changes you can make is also one of the easiest to overlook: turning off Android’s interface animations.
The method below uses Android’s built-in Developer options and focuses on three animation settings. It can make a phone feel considerably faster because menus and transitions happen immediately rather than taking the default animation time.
There is a catch, though: this does not magically make the processor faster or increase RAM. It mainly removes the visual delay between actions.
Before changing anything, know what you’re actually improving
The three settings discussed here control interface animations:
Window animation scale
Transition animation scale
Animator duration scale
On many Android phones, particularly Samsung Galaxy devices, they are normally set to 1x.
Changing them to Animation off removes those transition effects.
That can make an older phone feel much more responsive, particularly when opening menus or moving between screens. But it won’t fix every type of slowdown.
If an application takes 10 seconds to process something because the processor is overloaded, disabling animations won’t turn those 10 seconds into one.
Think of it as removing the waiting room, not upgrading the engine.
1. Open Android’s Settings
Start by opening the Settings application.
You can find it in the app drawer or pull down the notification panel and tap the gear icon.
The exact appearance of the Settings menu depends on the manufacturer and Android version, so don’t worry if your Samsung Galaxy doesn’t look exactly like another Android phone shown in a tutorial.

2. Unlock Developer options
This is where the useful setting is hidden.
On a Samsung Galaxy, go to:
Settings → About phone → Software information
Find Build number and tap it repeatedly.
The supplied tutorial recommends approximately five taps. On many current Android builds, however, the system requires seven taps, so don’t be surprised if five taps aren’t enough.
Android may ask for your device PIN, password or pattern.
After the required taps, you should see a notification indicating that developer mode has been enabled.
You haven’t changed the phone’s performance yet. You’ve simply unlocked a menu containing additional system settings.

3. Find Developer options
Return to the main Settings menu.
On Samsung devices, Developer options normally appears near the bottom of Settings after it has been enabled.
Open it.
This menu contains a huge number of settings intended primarily for developers and advanced users. That is exactly why you should resist the temptation to start changing things at random.
For this particular speed adjustment, you only need three options.

4. Turn off the three animation scales
Scroll through Developer options until you find:
Window animation scale
Transition animation scale
Animator duration scale
They will commonly be set to 1x.
Open each option and select:
Animation off
Do this for all three.
The effect should be immediately noticeable when navigating the interface. Windows should appear without the usual transition, and moving between screens can feel much faster.
But there is an important distinction here.
Your phone hasn’t actually become more powerful.
The CPU hasn’t gained extra processing cores. RAM capacity hasn’t increased. Storage hasn’t become faster.
You’ve simply removed animations that were deliberately slowing down the visual presentation.
That distinction matters because it tells you what to expect from the tweak.

5. Don’t make a habit of force-closing every app
The original tutorial recommends using Close all from the recent-apps screen to keep RAM clean.
This is one piece of advice I’d treat with some caution.
Android is designed to manage memory itself. Having an application visible in the recent-apps list does not necessarily mean that it is actively consuming the same amount of CPU resources as an application running in the foreground.
Constantly force-closing everything can even make some applications less efficient because they have to reload from scratch the next time you open them.
If a particular application is frozen, behaving badly or consuming excessive resources, closing it can make sense.
But you don’t need to obsessively empty the recent-apps list every few minutes.

6. Restart the phone
After changing the animation settings, restarting the phone is a sensible final step.
Open the power menu, choose Power off, wait around 20 seconds, and turn the device back on.
The restart gives the system a clean session after you’ve made the changes.
However, don’t expect the restart itself to perform some special “RAM cleaning” operation that permanently makes the phone faster. Any improvement you notice should primarily come from the settings you’ve changed and from the normal effects of restarting the operating system.

What this trick can — and cannot — fix
This is where many “speed up your Android” tutorials go too far.
Turning animations off can make a phone feel faster. It is particularly useful when the device is responsive but its interface feels sluggish.
It will not necessarily fix:
An almost-full storage drive
A failing battery
Severe overheating
A damaged storage chip
Heavy background activity
An application that constantly crashes
Hardware limitations
A processor that simply isn’t powerful enough for modern applications
If your phone remains slow after disabling animations, the problem is probably somewhere deeper.
That’s when it makes more sense to check available storage, battery condition, problematic applications, system updates and background processes.
One setting is safer than experimenting with the entire menu
Developer options are powerful precisely because they expose settings that normal users don’t usually need.
You may encounter options related to USB debugging, background processes, graphics rendering, networking and other parts of Android.
Don’t change them just because they sound like performance tweaks.
For this particular method, leave everything else alone.
If you aren’t sure what a Developer option does, don’t touch it simply because a tutorial claims it will make your phone “10 times faster.”
That kind of claim is usually marketing, not engineering.
Should you actually disable animations?
If your Android phone feels slow when opening menus, switching screens or navigating the interface, yes — it’s a harmless experiment worth trying.
If the phone is slow because applications take a long time to load, games stutter or the system freezes under heavy workloads, your expectations should be much lower.
There is also a personal preference involved.
Some people like Android’s animations because they provide visual feedback and make transitions feel smoother. With animations disabled, the interface can feel extremely abrupt.
If you don’t like the result, simply return to Developer options and set the three scales back to 1x.
